Shift toward contract roles in the UK
Looking at Talentmark data, our placements within UK translational sciences highlight a strong, focused market. While total placement volume has increased slightly year on year at Scientist level and below, the proportion of contract roles has risen from 57% of all scientific placements in Q1 2025 to 70% in Q2 2026. This signals a clear shift toward flexible, project-based deployment over permanent headcount
Rising demand for senior translational experts
At our more senior levels (Principal to Director), year-on-year comparisons show growing client demand for highly specialised translational scientists with expertise in preclinical development, biomarker strategy, assay development, and translational integration. This trend underscores both the sector’s increasing maturity and the rising value placed on translational expertise.
Focus continues to centre on senior talent
Recruitment continues to be driven by sustained growth in cell and gene therapies, precision medicine, multi-omics translational R&D, and AI-enabled R&D – creating excellent opportunities for top-tier talent. While tighter funding has made hiring in Q1 2026 more selective, demand remains strong for senior, cross-functional translational expertise.
Looking ahead to the rest of 2026
Looking ahead, we expect continued growth throughout the rest of 2026, particularly across key UK biotech hubs such as Cambridge, Oxford, and London. Competition for candidates who can effectively bridge laboratory research and clinical translation is set to remain high.
